Skilled and Experienced Eye Doctor in Bellmore, NY

When it comes to the eyes, there are numerous conditions and diseases that can affect a person. At the Keratoconus Center of Long Island, we specialize in diagnosing and treating keratoconus, a condition in which the cornea thins and forms a cone-shaped bulge resulting in nearsightedness. People with this condition often cannot wear normal contact lenses and experience worsening symptoms as the years go by. When you need a knowledgeable eye doctor in Bellmore, NY, who understands your condition and can provide cutting-edge treatments and solutions for you, turn to our clinic. We specialize in corneal transplants, special hard contact lenses, scleral and hybrid contact lenses and other treatments for keratoconus.

Keratoconus is similar to astigmatism in that it affects the shape of the cornea, resulting in myopia and blurred vision. However, unlike regular astigmatism, patients with keratoconus cannot wear soft contact lenses or undergo corrective procedures like laser surgery. It’s necessary to see an eye doctor to determine if you have keratoconus or astigmatism, so get in touch with us to schedule an appointment if you have any of the following symptoms:

Mild Blurring of Vision

Straight Lines Look Bent or Wavy

Increased Sensitivity to Light

Eye Redness and Swelling

Inability to Focus Vision

Nearsightedness

Contact Lenses Don’t Fit Properly

Why Can’t Patients with Keratoconus Wear Normal Lenses?

Because of the way keratoconus distorts the shape of the cornea, it’s impossible for patients with this condition to wear standard soft contact lenses. Instead, they must wear hard contact lenses that correct the shape distortion of the cornea. In addition to special hard contact lenses, keratoconic patients may choose to undergo corneal transplant surgery.

Trusted Corneal Transplant Doctor with Extensive Experience

If you cannot wear hard contacts or your keratoconus progresses to the point where your vision is in very bad shape, your eye doctor may recommend a corneal transplant. We have extensive experience performing this surgery, and can help you regain your ability to see clearly, without squinting, and without struggling to focus on objects. Reach out to our office to find out if you’re likely to be a candidate for corneal transplant surgery.
